In our 19th summer, the Walloon Institute remains committed to the principles which make us unique among residential retreats for educators. As our 5,000 "alumni" will tell you, Walloon features:
An outstanding faculty which mixes nationally-noted authors with veteran classroom teachers who use every strategy they teach;
Consistent modeling of exemplary teaching strategies, ensuring that we practice (and demonstrate) what we preach;
Small workshop enrollments, allowing personal contact among all participants and faculty;
A diverse kindergarten through college peer group, working partly together and partly at our own grade levels, so we can all develop practical, concrete activities for our own classrooms, as well as ideas for cooperative action across grades, schools, and whole districts;
A spirit of hard work and serious fun, delighting in the challenge of teaching and the joy of our colleagueship. The combination seems to work. To date, we have welcomed Wallooners from 40 states and eight countries.
For those of you familiar with Walloon, we were excited to continue to partner with Heinemann Professional Development. This pairing is a natural one in many ways. Many Walloon speakers and core staff publish books with Heinemann, so we are already "family." Lots of us also work as speakers through Heinemann Speakers and Workshops, so we know firsthand how efficient and organized these folks are. In fact, many of us Wallooners and the staff in Portsmouth are already friends, and we just like working with each other. But most important, we are philosophically together; Walloon and Heinemann are allied in a quest for better literacy programs, more progressive school leadership, and improved instructional practices for all young people.
